Why American Fork Homeowners Call Water Damage Specialists for Disposals
Same day, from 10 minutes away
Common 1/2 and 3/4 HP units are on the truck, so most replacements are finished the day you call, and a leaking unit gets a plumber fast at any hour.
A licensed plumber, not an appliance tech
Utah State Contractor License #7033426-5501. A disposal is plumbing: it touches your drain, your trap, your dishwasher line, and sometimes your wiring. Every technician is background-checked, and the license is one search away on the Utah DOPL site.
We tell you the cheap answer first
If it is a jam, a switch, or a flange seal, that is what we fix. We do not sell a new unit to someone who needs 20 minutes and a hex wrench, and we do not rebuild a 12-year-old motor to save you a replacement you will need next year anyway.
Upfront, written pricing
You get the number before we start. Current offers: $50 off any service, $100 off any plumbing repair, $175 off shower valve replacement. Mention the coupon when you call.
The only disposal installer in American Fork with a restoration crew
When the leak under the sink has already done damage, we dry it and fix it instead of pointing you at another company.

Free estimates during regular service hours
For a replacement, an upgrade, or a first-time install, we come out, check the sink, drain, and power, and give you a written quote at no charge.
Every disposal has two fixes a homeowner can do: push the red reset button on the bottom, and turn the motor from underneath with the hex wrench to free a jam. If you have done both and it still does not work, one of these is going on.
Tried the Reset Button Already? Here Is What the Symptom Actually Means
- It hums but does not spin. The motor is getting power but the impeller plate is locked. If the hex wrench will not turn it, something hard is wedged in the grinding chamber and has jammed the flywheel (a bone, a fruit pit, a dropped utensil, a bottle cap) or the bearings have seized. Seized bearings on a unit over 8 years old mean replacement; a wedged object on a newer unit is a repair.
- It does nothing at all. No hum, no click. Either the wall switch or the under-sink outlet has failed, the breaker has tripped, the reset button has failed internally, or the motor is burned out. We test the circuit before we touch the unit, because a $40 switch is a common cause.
- It runs, but the sink drains slowly or backs up into the other basin. Usually not the disposal. The drain line past it or the P-trap is clogged with grease, scale, or coffee grounds, or the dishwasher tailpiece is blocked. Running the disposal harder will not fix it. This is American Fork drain cleaning work, and we do it on the same visit.
- It leaks. Where it leaks tells us everything. From the top, the sink flange has lost its seal: a reset and new plumber's putty. From the side, the dishwasher inlet or the discharge gasket has failed: a repair. From the bottom of the housing, the internal seal is gone and the motor is next: a replacement, and it has probably been dripping on your cabinet floor for a while.
- It grinds, rattles, or screams. Metal on metal means a broken impeller or a foreign object. Shut it off and leave it off; running it will finish off the motor.
- It trips the reset every few minutes. The motor is overheating, either from a partial jam, dull impellers packed with hard-water scale, or windings that are failing. On an older unit this is the end.
American Fork's hard water is a factor in almost all of these. Mineral scale builds on the grinding ring and impellers, the unit works harder to do less, and motors that should last 12 years give out at 8. Disposals in the older homes near Main Street were often added to drain lines that predate them and never drained quite right; builder-grade units in the newer subdivisions toward Utah Lake are now aging out on the same schedule as the water heaters.
Never put your hand in the chamber, even with the switch off. If the unit is wired to a wall switch, someone can flip it. We use tongs, and so should you.
A garbage disposal is a $150 to $400 appliance with a 10- to 12-year life. That changes the math compared to a water heater: a repair only makes sense when it is cheap and the unit is young.
Repair or Replace? How We Decide
Here is how we call it, and we will tell you which row you are in before any work starts.
| Situation | What we recommend |
|---|---|
| Under 5 years old, jammed by a hard object, hex wrench will not free it | Repair. We clear it from above with the power off. Usually under 30 minutes. |
| Under 5 years, leaking at the sink flange or dishwasher connection | Repair. Reseal the flange or replace the gasket and clamp. |
| Any age, dead with no hum | Diagnose first. If it is the switch, outlet, or breaker, that is the repair. If the motor is gone, replace. |
| 5 to 10 years, seized bearings, screaming, or tripping the reset repeatedly | Replace. A new unit costs about what a motor repair would, and comes with a fresh warranty. |
| Any age, leaking from the bottom of the housing | Replace, today. The internal seal has failed, the motor is next, and the drip has been going for a while. |
| Over 10 years, any problem | Replace. You are one repair away from the next failure, and newer units are quieter and grind finer. |
Most of the time, the honest answer on an older disposal is replacement, and most of the time we can do it in the same visit. When it is a 20-minute jam on a two-year-old unit, we will tell you that too.
A disposal is a half-day project for a handy homeowner and usually an hour or two for us, and the difference shows up in the parts people skip: the right horsepower, a dishwasher knockout that actually gets knocked out, a trap that is sloped correctly, and a leak check under load before we leave.
Garbage Disposal Installation and Replacement in American Fork
Sizing by horsepower
A 1/3 HP unit is for a single person who barely cooks. 1/2 HP is the builder-grade standard in most American Fork subdivisions and jams easily on fibrous food. We recommend 3/4 HP for a typical family kitchen and 1 HP for big households, home cooks, or anyone tired of jams. Higher horsepower units also run quieter and grind finer, which matters on the older drain lines near Main Street.
Brands we install
InSinkErator (Badger and Evolution series) and Moen, and we service all major brands. We stock 1/2 and 3/4 HP units on the truck for same-day replacement; 1 HP and batch-feed units are usually a next-day install.
Hard-wired or plug-in
We match the electrical connection to what your kitchen has. If you have no outlet under the sink and want a plug-in unit, we can add one, and we can add an air switch on the countertop so the switch is where you want it instead of across the kitchen.
Dishwasher connection
The dishwasher drain ties into the disposal. We connect it, loop it high to prevent backflow, and install an air gap where code requires one. The single most common cause of a "brand new disposal that leaks" is an installer who forgot to remove the dishwasher knockout plug.
Drain and trap
Older kitchens often have a trap that was adapted to a disposal years ago and drains slowly. We correct the slope and replace brittle fittings while the unit is out, and we test the drain under a full sink before we call it done.
First-time installation
No disposal yet? We can add one to most kitchen sinks. We cut the sink flange opening if needed, run the circuit if needed, and install the unit, trap, switch, and connections under the sink. Permits apply only when new electrical is involved, and we pull them. We can also coordinate the install with a kitchen remodel when timing matters.
Haul-away and cleanup
The old unit leaves with us. The cabinet gets wiped down and checked for the water damage covered below.
Every installation comes with written, upfront pricing before we start, help choosing the right unit for your kitchen and household, and the manufacturer's warranty registered in your name.
Humming, dead, leaking, or too small for your kitchen: a disposal problem does not get better on its own, and a leaking one is soaking the cabinet while you wait.

Repair or Replace? The Honest Answer, Fast
Half of "broken" disposals aren't broken. A unit that hums but won't spin is usually jammed — an Allen wrench in the bottom socket frees the flywheel in thirty seconds. One that's gone silent often just tripped its overload; the red reset button underneath brings it back. We'll walk you through both on the phone for free, because sending a truck to press a button isn't service. But some symptoms are terminal, and you deserve to hear it straight: a disposal leaking from the body — the housing itself, not a loose connection — is done; its internal seals have failed and no honest tech can fix that. When it's dead, we size the right replacement for your household and drain line and install it the same visit, with new mounts, seals, and connections so the install doesn't become next year's leak.
In American Fork, the biggest disposal-killer is the water itself. Utah Valley's water is some of the hardest on the Wasatch Front, and it scales grind chambers, freezes bearings, and seizes any unit that sits unused for a few weeks — which is why so many "dead" American Fork disposals are actually mineral-locked, and why so many others die years early. The kitchens span every era of the problem: pioneer-era and mid-century homes near Main Street with disposals retrofitted onto drain lines that predate the appliance entirely — where the disposal and the kitchen drain tend to fail as a team, and the fix is clearing the drain and right-sizing the unit in one visit, not installing a more powerful disposal that pushes the clog deeper — and the newer growth toward the lake, where builder-grade units installed by the street are hitting the eight-to-twelve-year wall together. We've seen every version; we've fixed every version.
The Slow Leak That Costs More Than the Disposal
Nineteen years of Utah kitchens has taught us this: the disposal that fails loudly is the cheap problem. The expensive one fails quietly — a slow drip from a corroded housing or tired connection soaking the cabinet floor for months before anyone smells it. By then the particleboard has swollen, the musty odor has arrived, and you don't have a disposal problem anymore; you have water damage, and often mold, in the most-used cabinet in your house. Every other installer serving American Fork swaps the unit and closes the cabinet door on the damage. We're the one crew that fixes both: replace the disposal, then dry, treat, and rebuild the cabinet — IICRC certified restoration, one visit ordering, one bill that makes sense.
Disposal & Kitchen Plumbing Service Across American Fork
Disposal repair, same-visit replacement, first-time installations — common in American Fork's older kitchens that never had one — upgrades to quieter and more powerful units, kitchen drain cleaning when the clog is past the disposal, dishwasher connections and under-sink supply lines, and leak cleanup when a drip got ahead of you — across every American Fork neighborhood from historic downtown and the bench to Art Dye, Greenwood, and the growth toward Utah Lake. One call, kitchen handled.
The Leak Under the Sink Nobody Noticed
The most expensive garbage disposal problem in American Fork is not the disposal. It is the slow drip from a failed housing seal or a loose discharge connection that nobody saw because the cabinet is full of cleaning supplies. By the time the smell or the swollen cabinet floor gives it away, the particleboard has been wet for weeks, mold is growing on the back of the cabinet, and in a lot of kitchens the water has found its way under the flooring and into the subfloor.
An appliance tech will swap the disposal and leave. We are a restoration company with plumbers, so the same visit covers both:
- We pull the cleaning supplies, meter the cabinet floor and the wall behind it, and check the flooring around the sink base.
- If it is dry, we replace the unit and you are done.
- If it is wet, we dry it with a small air mover and dehumidifier, treat any mold on the cabinet back, and replace the cabinet floor panel if it has delaminated. Where water got under the floor, our American Fork water damage restoration crew takes over.
- Everything is photographed and documented. A sudden leak is usually covered by homeowners insurance; a long slow one often is not, and we will tell you honestly which yours looks like before you decide anything.
If your kitchen has had a faint musty smell under the sink for a while, mention it when you call. It is almost always this.
American Fork Garbage Disposal FAQ
My garbage disposal is not working. What should I try before calling?
Two things, with the switch off: press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit, then insert the hex wrench in the center hole underneath and work it back and forth to free the flywheel. If it still hums, does nothing, or leaks, call (385) 484-0777. Never put your hand in the chamber.
How much does garbage disposal repair or replacement cost in American Fork?
We give you a written price before any work starts. As a rule, a jam or seal repair is a small fraction of a replacement, and a standard 1/2 or 3/4 HP replacement installed is in the low hundreds plus the unit. The $100 off any plumbing repair offer applies.
Can you replace my garbage disposal the same day?
Yes, in most cases. We stock 1/2 and 3/4 HP InSinkErator units on the truck. 1 HP, batch-feed, and Moen units are usually next-day, so you have options by model and horsepower.
What size garbage disposal do I need?
3/4 HP for a typical American Fork family kitchen. 1/2 HP is the builder-grade standard and jams easily on fibrous food. 1 HP for big households or home cooks. Higher horsepower runs quieter and grinds finer, which helps on older drain lines.
My disposal runs but the sink will not drain. Is the disposal broken?
Usually not. The drain line past the disposal is clogged, or the dishwasher tailpiece is blocked. That is an American Fork drain cleaning job, and we do it on the same visit.
Why does my garbage disposal leak from the bottom?
The internal seal has failed. That is a replacement, not a repair, and the drip has usually been going for weeks. Have us check the cabinet floor and the flooring around the sink base when we come; if it is wet, our American Fork water damage restoration crew dries it the same visit.
What should never go down a garbage disposal?
Grease and oil, which solidify and clog the drain. Fibrous vegetables like celery, corn husks, and onion skins. Starchy foods like pasta, rice, and potato peels, which swell. Coffee grounds, eggshells, fruit pits, and bones larger than a chicken wing. Run cold water before, during, and 20 seconds after every use. In American Fork's hard water, a monthly grind of ice cubes helps knock scale off the impellers.
Do you install garbage disposals in homes that have never had one?
Yes. We cut the flange opening if needed, add an outlet or air switch, install the unit and trap, and connect the dishwasher. If new wiring is required, we pull the electrical permit.
